Growing up in both the United States and Pakistan, I have a unique educational background. I studied in 9 different schools and from 3 different education systems- American, Cambridge, and Pakistani Education. Throughout my diverse learning process, I was exposed to many types of students, teachers, and learning styles. I began tutoring when I was a freshman in high school and had a small tutoring business throughout those years. I taught all subjects, from Math, English, Literature, Sciences, Urdu, and Religion. That is where my passion for teaching emerged. After moving back to Texas for my B.S. in Biology, I continued to work at Independent School Districts and ESL programs because I could not go a day without teaching children, inspiring them, and watching them grow into the best versions of themselves. I love making them see the wonders of the miraculous human body. I especially love helping them unravel the jumbled mix of thoughts in their heads, whether it is through a creative essay or a long word problem. Lastly, being the eldest of five, I feel like teaching was always the inevitable path my life would take, and it did! I couldn’t be happier doing what I love doing. I also love reading, writing, cooking from scratch, and researching ways to live a healthier life.

I grew up loving the beauty and simplicity of math, and now I enjoy helping other people make sense of it. I’ve spend the last 9 years teaching, most recently teaching middle school math and science. For this reason, I decided to enter the education field, so that I can show students that they can surpass any boundaries that come their way. Hello everyone, my name is Lisette and I am from Los Angeles! I completed my undergraduate education at UC Santa Barbara and now I am getting ready to begin medical school this fall! Karina Soto

I live (and grew up) in Bell, California. I have always been interested in mathematics. I have always liked to help others (mostly my classmates) understand math, and to show them that although math can be challenging and tricky, it is not impossible. As an undergraduate, I began working as a tutor at my college. I helped fellow peers in Calculus 1,2,3, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math. I also worked as a Math grader, assisting Discrete Math and Probability professors. In addition to math, I am also very interested in logic. In college, I studied classical and non-classical logic. Towards the end of my college career, I delved into the philosophy of mathematics.

During my spare time you can find me playing my flute or piccolo, reading Stephen King, watching horror movies, or learning mathematics.

I love helping students understand the concepts of mathematics and why we have math. I’ve been teaching mathematics in the classroom for the past six years, from Pre Algebra to Calculus. My goal is to help students have an open mindset (rather than a fixed mindset) and to be persistent. Teaching students with various learning abilities involves creativity, time and a desire to understand how a student learns best. The biggest challenge is to help students realize that mistakes are a part of learning mathematics. Students will learn more from mistakes in order to help their brain grow and expand, so I encourage students when they make mistakes. I believe everyone can learn math and my passion is to give students the opportunity to learn by having them think. I want my students to think like a mathematician. My first experience with teaching occurred when I was five years old and tried to teach a friend in my daycare how to read. I then started tutoring my peers throughout high school, graduated college with a degree in education, and began an exciting career as a teacher. I have five years experience as a classroom teacher and fourteen years experience as a private tutor. During my years of teaching in the classroom, I was twice nominated for Teacher of the Year. Teaching others is truly in my blood, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life! It is my philosophy that in any tutor-student interaction, a comfortable, trusting relationship is imperative, and the entire student should be addressed. Therefore, adjustments to work and study habits as well as self-esteem and attitudes about learning are interwoven throughout each of my tutoring sessions. As a strong advocate for student empowerment, I believe that students are very in tune with their strengths, weaknesses, and needs, and I therefore treat them as partners throughout the tutoring process. I’ve been teaching and tutoring English across a variety of platforms for the last four years, from AVID tutoring at junior high schools to teaching high school English at multiple schools in southern California. I’ve also spent a great deal of time teaching and tutoring students in AP and SAT/ACT prep, and have worked as a Supplemental Instructor at Cal State Dominguez Hills, aiding incoming college freshman with English so that they can rapidly reach University-level coursework.

Teaching is an absolute passion for me, and elevating students to positions of success in both reading and writing – as well as in general life skills – is one of the most rewarding things imaginable. Throughout the work I’ve done, I’ve had the luxury of working with many underprivileged youth, at-risk students, and English language learners, and these experiences have shown me how important it is to tailor every lesson to each individual student’s needs. I was born and raised in Rockford, Illinois. I am happily married, and my wife and I have two wonderful sons. I have a decade of experience teaching various subjects at the elementary and middle school level as a special education teacher. I have been tutoring students for the past 5 years. My name is Casey and I have over 11 years of tutoring. I have always been a thinker. I was born in Peru and grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, steeped in learning and ideas since childhood. This love for the Life of the Mind has been a defining force in my life.

I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, but since then I have lived all across the country. I’m currently in New York with my wife. I started off as a Mathematics major at Arizona State University, but I switched to Kinesiology because I could incorporate my interests in math to studying the human body in the field of biomechanics, which is ultimately what I got my Master’s degree in from East Carolina University. Hello! I grew up in Jupiter, Florida. In high school, I remember convincing myself that some people were just inherently good at math while others were not. I learned, though, that just as with most other skills in life, we can all improve our mathematics ability with effective and patient practice! I have several years of teaching and tutoring experience in both mathematics and physics. I love teaching because I know how it feels to struggle with seemingly indomitable learning obstacles, and I want to help fellow learners recognize that they too can improve their abilities with challenging subjects. I’m passionate about music and play the piano. While i performed publicly a few years ago, now I mostly play for friends and use music as a means of catharsis.

Max Eager

I’ve spent the majority of my adult life working and living in academe, both here in the States and abroad. I began at Indiana University, where I studied Latin and Greek, and then prosecuted my classical education at Oxford, where I took two research degrees in ancient history. Returning to my native New York, I completed a professional degree at Columbia in the School of International and Public Affairs. During this decade or so, I’ve been exposed to a variety of teaching styles and methodologies that have come to inform my own tutorials and how I teach a given subject. As an historian, I have been trained to appreciate how the granular fits into the wider scheme of things; and it is that interconnection of various topics which makes tutoring so rewarding.

After pursuing a short career in art, I discovered that I enjoyed the process of learning and teaching. While I have degrees in Education, in particular educational foundations and educational philosophy, I am more interested in literature and the writing process. Currently, I like to research 19th to early 20th century Norwegian literature. Throughout the past 13 years, I have worked with students at the PreK level learning to write their names to graduate students working on their doctoral dissertations. I hope to inspire others to think about the ways that their interpretations of literature matter, and the writing process only strengthens their abilities to communicate their perspectives.
When I am not teaching, I like writing, drawing or painting, but I also like more carefree pastimes like watching old British detective shows or videos on historical costume making.

I grew up in Chino Hills, California, where I submerged myself in both academics and sports. I was a scholar athlete in high school and was fortunate enough to earn a scholarship for both softball and academics to the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. While in Hawai’i, I made the Dean’s List every semester and earned NCAA All-Conference honors for both academics and athletics. I was also blessed with the opportunity to both coach and mentor young girls in softball, school, and life during my four years there. I have always been interested in biochemistry, and during my education journey, I realized I had a passion for teaching as well. I grew up in South Jersey outside of Philadelphia, an avid Philly sports fan (Go Birds!). I have three brothers, so growing up was filled with constant games and laughter that I still thrive on today. This led me to take on my first job as a teacher at KinderCare in high school, where I would both tutor kids and play various games and activities with them.

Craving warmer weather, I took a leap of faith across the country and attended UCLA for my Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. During my time there I had the pleasure of privately tutoring three students for three years as they progressed through high school, helping them attain their desired grades and get accepted into their dream schools. I started working in schools at the suggestion of my mother. My Mom, my sister, and my Wai Gong (grandfather) were, and are, teachers. Being both jobless and a recent college graduate at the time, I figured I would give it a try.
From the very beginning, I found so much joy and purpose in working with students. Although this path has been and will continue to be difficult, my life has been so enriched and inspired by the young people that I have worked with since 2011.
I have worked with students in all grade levels, from K-12. I recently earned my Multiple Teaching Credential, and I am completing my Master’s in Education. This means that I can soon be the lovingly-annoying elementary school teacher that tries to be “hip” with the times, and who also puts gifs in their Google slides presentations.

Honestly, I seriously struggled with math. The ‘crying from frustration’ type of struggle. Chemistry, too. Teaching has been a central part of my identity for as long I can remember.  I have always been passionate about science and music, learning and sharing my knowledge with friends, classmates, students and family members.  After graduating from Lawrence University with a degree in Trombone Performance, I moved to New York City to pursue my career as a musician, completing my Master’s degree in Jazz Performance at Queens College.  While gigging and studying, I tutored math, English, and taught middle and high school band classes. Hello! My name is Yair Ben-Zvi and I was born in Jerusalem before moving to Los Angeles with my family thousands of years ago (the 1990s) and took to reading and writing very early. Following a brief stay in Israel, I returned and took my MA from CSUN in English because, honestly, a life without literature, to me, is not a life. I was raised in a small town in west Texas named Fabens, which lies just outside the city of El Paso. Upon graduating from high school, I immediately enlisted into the United States Air Force, where I served for a little over 8 years, at which point I was separated for medical reasons. It was then that I enrolled into Texas State University and began my studies with the ultimate goal of becoming a mathematics professor at the collegiate level. I received my B.S. in Mathematics in 2018, and immediately applied and was accepted into the Mathematics Graduate Program at Texas State University. I was also accepted for an Instructional Assistantship and got the opportunity to teach at the university for the 2018 Fall semester. After graduating from Kent State University, I taught for Akron Public Schools at the Akron Alternative Academy, North High School, and Akron Juvenile Detention Center (2014-2016). I grew up in SC and ended up at the University of Tennessee to study Deaf education. The majority of my adult life has been spent actively involved in the Deaf community, both in the US and abroad. In fact, I’ve spent eight of the last ten years with my family living and working in the Deaf community in Vietnam. As a Deaf educator, I taught high school students for several years in Tennessee. Additionally, I’ve worked as a free-lance American Sign Language interpreter and as an ASL teacher. One of the things I’m most passionate about is seeing Deaf people have access to sign language, as well as seeing the gap bridged between the Deaf and hearing worlds. My wife and I co-founded a non-profit called Hands for Vietnam, which provides Vietnamese Sign Language training and education for Deaf children and adults in central Vietnam. In 2014, we opened a school for Deaf children, the majority of whom had never been to school before. To get to witness the whole world open up for a Deaf child when he/she is finally given access to sign language is a privilege I never take for granted!

I am currently a high school math teacher in Greenville, NC. I am originally from Rhode Island, and so I am a huge Boston sports fan! I have always loved math and was on track to major in education in college before deciding to switch to Psychology. Ironically enough, I ended up in education after all. I have lots of experience with SAT and ACT tutoring in addition to math. Growing up as a Navy child, moving frequently, I was always starting behind other children in school. I spent the last 15 years teaching high school math in Austin, Texas. As a child in Queens, New York, I first discovered my love of science while throwing eggs, liquids and other items out of my elementary school’s window and watching the velocity at which they fell.
